Case study: New Caledonia Energy

Supercharging Engineering Teams for a New Power Plant

NCE

Meet the project

New Caledonia Energy (NCE) is on a mission to develop a sustainable clean energy strategy. In alliance with Société Le Nickel (SLN) a major reconstruction plan is underway for the thermal Doniambo Power Plant. It is the community’s emergency power source. The aging plant has served its purpose and now it’s time to design a new plant with higher capacity, better efficiency, and a strong environmental mandate.
01
The company

New Caledonia Energy is on a mission to develop a sustainable energy strategy to supply cleaner power across the Island. The redesign of the existing Doniambo Power Plant is the right opportunity. By championing a sustainable strategy, the new plant will be better positioned to grow with the community, while also ensuring a healthier community with fewer environmental impacts.

02
The challenge

Originally built over 45 years ago, the existing
plant no longer meets the Island’s economic and
environmental needs. Operating with heavy fuel oils, the plant causes a considerable amount of pollution and poses a long-term risk. Redesigning the plant enables the community to make strides towards cleaner energy and increased supply. As the first sustainable power plant redesign on the Island, it requires innovation and the world’s best team.

03
The solution

Easy Skill was able to bridge the skills gap by
providing skilled candidates for 70% of the vacant roles needed to successfully deliver the new plant. Thanks to assembling the right team quickly, the project was able to successfully move forward to the next phase - the call for tender.

04
The result

Assembling a team of experts was easy with the right people partner. Armed with deep industry expertise, Easy Skill proactively offered technical experts for key roles in the team from utilities to gas transportation to permitting. We shared experienced technical profiles to simplify the process of building the right team for this pioneer project.

The context

NCE’s project is ambitious with a complete start-to-finish redesign of a power plant on a remote island. As a first for the community, assembling the right team with the right expertise and innovative spirit was incredibly challenging. Organising a natural gas supply will also prove to be a major challenge. It will require a floating power plant or gravity-based structure to produce 1350GWh per year. The people of New Caledonia need reliable energy supplies for every aspect of their daily lives. And that energy supply solution needs to be designed with the future in mind in order to ensure the long-term prosperity of the people. Given the heavy economic reliance on mining operations, reliable cleaner energy supply is essential.

What the client says

Thanks to Easy Skill, we were able to build the right technical team easily for the first phase of this critical project. Skills shortages are a constant issue on this island and they pose a serious threat to project delivery. For us, execution relies on our ability to find the people we need exactly when we need them. With Easy Skill, we eliminated the stress of finding the right people to take our team to the next level.

Changing the world

With 10% of the world’s nickel reserves on the
island, mining can generate up to 90% of
exports and provides 25% of the jobs in the
private sector. Supporting the industry requires
right team of engineers to build the capabilities
necessary to continue growth community.

Redesigning an innovative gas power plant
with higher efficiency and capacity requires
the world’s best engineers. As a group of
engineering experts ourselves, we speak the
same technical mining language. This deep
understanding enables us to translate project
needs into roles effortlessly. By anticipating
NCE’s staffing needs, we shared more than 40
of the top quality technical profiles to help
them build their dream team.

As a member of the global Kyoto Agreement,
New Caledonia is committed to leading the
transformation towards sustainability. The new
power plant will pave the way for a cleaner
energy source and reduce the nation’s reliance
on fuel sources. The Island is committed
to providing affordable alternative energy
solutions to reduce environmental impacts and
greenhouse gas emissions, while also working
with the energy industry to reduce overall
consumption.

The results

As a result of Easy Skill proactively anticipating
the technical expertise required, we helped NCE
to fill 70% of their vacancies with our top quality
candidates. NCE was able to build the right team
faster and with less stress. Supercharging their
technical team has given them the confidence
needed to take on the new power plant project
with ease.

The big wins

  • Assembled team faster
  • Secured to technical talent
  • Eliminated stress
